Why Will Sumatran Elephants Extinct?

A Sumatra Elephant

Decades ago, Sumatran elephants, Elephas maximus with sub-species called Sumatranus, can be found in deep jungle of Sumatra, Indonesia only. Their population more than ten thousands, categorized as endangered species by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).

Currently estimated, elephant number is less than 2 thousands, depleted around 85%. Then, IUCN has changed the status from “endangered” to “critically endangered” species. The main caused is a habitat loss due to human activities.

An elephant’s poop

Human activities that destroyed rain forest as elephant’s habitat included deforestation for timber and palm plantation. Rain forest is a place for elephants for feeding, nurturing and breeding ground.

Another cause of elephant population decreasing is illegal hunting for commercial ivory and mystic use of elephant organs for traditional medicine.

No serious efforts by community to protect Sumatran elephants. Population continue to decrease day by day. There is highly possibility that Sumatran elephants will extinct in near future.

What should we do?

  1. Bonjour,

De nombreux éléphants de Sumatra viennent se nourrir à cause du déboisement dans les champs. Ils sont abattus simplement pour avoir pénétré sur un champ exploité par des villageois.
L'être humain est vraiment le pire des prédateurs.

    Gros bisous 🌸

  3. Hi, I just wanted to thank you for visiting my blog, A Shropshire Patch, and leaving a comment. I have replied to you there but thought I'd hop over here as well in case you don't see it there. Thank you for alerting us to the plight of the Sumatran elephant, it's so very sad. I wish people would stop exploiting elephants as a "resource" and regard them as part of a wider ecology. x

  4. It's terrible what's happening and how the community do nothing about it.. They should be protected, send to jail the hunters and stop palm plantation but I think it won't happen :(

  5. I don't know what the immediate answer is, but the human population needs to reduce and we all need to check our lifestyles and make what changes we can to assist biodiversity.

  9. Terrible. And what's worse is that elephants aren't the only creatures being mindlessly treated so.

  14. It is always so sad to see that populations of animals are just going away because people have come in and messed everything up for them or hunting to take them out like that, so glad there are people out there who are fighting for them

  17. It is so sad that these animals have been hunted for the ivory. Shame that todays life and the way of the world is causing them to be extinct. I am afraid by the time my grandkids have kids or grands there will be a lot of missing animals and/or our honey bees that are so close to being extinct also. Sometimes the advanancement of life is so hard and it destroys the way of life of other things.

  18. Thanks so much for your post. I hate it went you read things like this are happening. Humans could learn a lot from the elephants. I do hope more stringent laws and enforcement will help situations like this. My Grandchilden will never be able to enjoy things like I did as a child. Thanks for taking time and stopping at my blog. Have a great weekend!
