Wild Ducks Don't Eat Bread - Sign 72

We always see people feeding wild animals include ducks in the lakes, man made lakes in our city, Baton Rouge, LA.

Feeding ducks with bread seem "great" treat but could be bad for them and lake (environments).

Some reasons are following:
1) Water pollution:
-  When bread remains uneaten, it can sink and develop mold, leading to water pollution and harm to the ecosystem.
- Additionally, this uneaten bread can attract unwanted pests such as rats, cockroaches, ants and flies

2) Low Nutrition
Bread primarily consists of carbohydrates and provides minimal vitamins, minerals, and protein. These essential nutrients that ducks require for their well-being. In essence, it’s akin to junk food for our feathered friends.

3) Overcrowding
Convenient food availability can result in increased duck congregations within a specific area, leading to resource competition and disease transmission.

  1. I haven't fed ducks in ages. Generally, at the zoo, but that's with their feed that you can buy. Thanks for the info!

  9. The ducks sure come around when you are walking at a park. But it's nice when they have food dispensers of the right kind of food for birds and fish. Not bread!!!

  11. It’s sad to see little kids with a big bag of bread — they have this big smile because they think they are really being good to the ducks. More and more such signs are warning their parents (and others) that this isn’t a thoughtful thing to do, even if you did it when you were a kid.

  12. Thanks for the PSA. I haven't fed any ducks in a very long time (if that).
Commercial bread also tends to contain sugar, High Fructose Corn Syrup, which can fatten the ducks and/or cause other problems. I have heard happens in humans.
Thanks for sharing with all of us. Be well!
