Hawks to Control Rats at Neighborhood - Critters 1

Saturday, February 5, 2022

Hawks are seen frequently in our neighborhood, they fly low and between houses, not over the houses.

The sharped shinned hawks are common hawks in our state, Louisiana. However, we saw they visit bird feeders at backyard at certain period.

In addition to the sharped shinned, Louisiana has other type of hawks, they include:
- cooper hawk
- red tailed hawk
- red shoulder hawk
- broad wing hawk
- Swainson's hawk
- Osprey

It seems the predators are quite adapted to our city or neighborhood life. They may find natural food easily.

Our friends believe that the hawks are coming to control rats at the neighborhoods.

Unfortunately, these predators also attacking, preying and hurting some other small animals such as:
- songbirds that come to visit our bird feeders at backyard.
- baby squirrels
- small pets (cats and dogs)
- chickens
- rabbits
- frogs

Actually, hawks consume everything, even snakes, insects and lizards.

  1. That's good if they are controlling the rat population but they also can cause problems like the ones you mention. People should keep their small animals indoors to be safe.

  3. It can be scarry living in the burbs. Wild life is in our back yard. I like the barn owls the best. These birds can also take care of bats too.

  8. We have hawks in our neighborhood as well. Last year they had a nest and babies. It was interesting to watch the parents take care of them and teach them. Unfortunately, they kill the rabbits but that's Mother Nature!

  13. It's rare to see a hawk here but the other day I was on the highway and one hit my car window, it must have been injured and it didn't take off quickly and hit my car, luckily it didn't break my windshield glass!

  18. Interesting article. Yes, hawks visit my neighborhood also and perch on my fence, but the ones I've seen are cooper hawks. Eating song birds is a way of life for them and thoroughly natural, so although I do get attached to "my" pretty song birds, I must accept they are also food for others. I do like the fact that I am not bothered by mice anymore. Thank you so much for visiting my blog and leaving a lovely comment.
