Tuesday, January 10, 2023

We talked about fox in our neighborhood at previous post:

- A Fox on the Box of Neighborhood – Critter 15 | Tanza Erlambang

Fig 01- Coyote walking in neighborhood

We aware that fox is not only dangerous wild animals visit our neighborhood, but also coyote.

You might be wonder what are different between foxes and coyotes? The simple answers are:

- coyotes have bigger sizes, and muscular body.

- foxes have smaller sizes, and less muscular body

Moreover, we will see more coyotes and foxes activity around residential areas as they are loosing their homes.

Fig 02- Magnolia, just for illustration

Nearby forests are cutting down for the new buildings, either for housings or business centers. These are going on and on.

Fig 03- A coyote looks at us.

Then, the wild animals have tried to find their new homes. One of them is our neighborhood. Of course, they are looking for food as well.

Coyotes are extremely adaptive. They can dig probably better than a dog and can climb almost if not better than a cat. They will dig deep and can get over a 5 foot fence.

Have you seen coyotes in nature? What do you think?

A Domestic Bunny as a Pet at Home – Critter 26

Wednesday, December 28, 2022

I saw rabbits wandering around in the neighborhood many times. They seem anxious at outside if they are staying in the long time or more than a day.

Fig 01- A wandering rabbit at outside

I don’t know how many neighbors have bunny as their pets. In term of space, we need “a huge place” or at least “appropriate space” to let rabbits moving around.

As reported by Saveafluff (2022) that wild rabbits need to run about 4.8 km (3 miles) per day.

Comparatively, as pets, rabbits should spend around 3 hours. Sure, the owner should find secure outdoor for their pets to run around, interact with others, and stretch their little legs.

Fig 02- A little bunny at neighborhood

Fig 03- A bunny at outdoor

What does secure outdoor means for domestic rabbits? At least, the places have these 3 characteristics:

- places which have shades from hot sun.

- predators free

- rabbits can’t escape from owners

Do your familiar with domestic rabbits or wild ones?

Fig 01- A little red silkie chicken

Recently, I saw a little critter when I was jogging on the way to the one of our neighborhood lakes.

The critter is a kind of new variation of chickens. Its physical shape is quite strange for me, and the first time to see it.

By searching through internet, I believe that it is a red silkie chicken. One of a rare variation.

Fig 02- The Hibiscus flower, blooming

Marco Polo reported this chicken for the first time when he traveled to Asia continent around 13th century.

Fig 03- A Jersey giant breed, just for comparison.

Many people believe that the red silkie chicken highly probably originated from these countries:

- China

- Japan

- India

Some people said this chicken is a good pet, since they are friendly and unique.

Have you seen this variation of chicken in your place?

Injured Hawk on the Yard – Critter 24

Thursday, December 1, 2022

We found an injured hawk on the ground of our yard recently. We did not know why this “young” bird injured.

Fig 01- A hawk on the ground

We believed the hawk might be attacked by big birds (predators), then we tried to contact anyone who could help.

While finding some helps, we aware that injures might be due to several factors, the most significant causes relate to predators.

Interestingly, the bigger hawks attack smaller and medium size hawks for unknown reasons.

Then, what other possible predators to attack hawk?

Fig 02- Pitcher, illustration

From Googling, we may find some predators which may attacks and even consume hawk.

Fig 03- Missed hawk’s feathers

The predators include crows, eagles and owls.

Little weak hawks or hawk’s eggs could be targeted by several other animals such as foxes, raccoon and snakes.

By the way, we finally find a foundation (institute) which could help injured hawk. The foundation is close by our neighborhood.

Wings of Hope, a Wildlife Sanctuary promised to take care injured hawk, and please to contact it in the future.

Duskywings Butterfly in the Southern States – Critter 23

Tuesday, November 22, 2022

Interestingly, there are contradict reports about the presents of Duskywings butterfly in Canada. One report said no recorded of Duskywings in Canada.

Fig 01- A Duskywings flies in the garden

I believe with reported from USGS (1999: Butterfly of North America), Duskywing was detected in the provinces of Manitoba and Ontario, Canada

However, yes, we may see this butterfly flies around from Northern to Southern states of the USA.

As reported by Mass Audubon (2022: Butterfly Atlas Species Accounts) that limit of duskywings distribution is “in extreme southern New Hampshire.”

I observed a quite number of duskywings during summer seasons when I visit gardens and parks in my city, Louisiana.

Image 2- A butterfly on the back of window

Image 3- A duskiwings on the flowers

They are abundant in the areas of Gulf of Mexico, parts of Louisiana and Mississippi states.

Duskiwings fly and have habitats in other southern states as well, include the states of:

- Texas

- Alabama

- Georgia

- and Florida

Erynnis sp is known duskywings genus. This genus has at least 17 species in the USA.

Do you know about duskywings butterfly? Do you see in your areas?

Pollinators which Love Coleus Plants – Critter 22

Tuesday, November 8, 2022

I have seen different colors and shapes of Coleus plants in the gardens across our city.

Fight 01- Bright colors of Coleus plant.

I found some colors of Coleus plant leaves are:

- yellow

- pink

- green

- red

- purple, orange, etc

What make me wonder that from several sources that there is no blue color for Coleus leaves. I don’t know why.

Fig 02- Hummingbirds, a pollinator

Basically, the plants respond to light:

- more light cause darker colors

- less light makes plant brighter

Fig 03- Butterfly, a beautiful pollinator

The plant, actually, is including in mint family. They are great air purifiers as indoor plants.

Fig 04- A bee could interest to any blooming plants

In our states, Louisiana, the plant could “blooming” until late summer. The blooming time is quite longer compared to some other plants.

Fig 05- Dark colors of Coleus plant

Since plants can’t take cold, under F 50 (C 10) degrees. We might grow in the indoor pots under bright light.

Then bring plants outdoors in the spring when temperature warm enough (higher than F 50 or C 10 degrees).

The blooming Coleus plants are very attractive to pollinators:

- hummingbirds

- butterfly

- bees

- and other pollinators

Have you seen this plant?

If yes, what colors do you see?
