Are Cage Free Hen’s Eggs Good for Health?

12 large eggs in the pack

I think that I have seen cage free eggs sold by several groceries years ago. But, I noticed the package numbers of cage free eggs sold are increasing, especially in Walmart super center recently. Surprising fact that around 17% of eggs are cage free nationally.

It is believed that cage free makes hens and their environment healthy more. Pastured from free range hen is less risk, then will reduce the contamination possibility of bacteria such as Salmonella sp.

Brown eggs of cage free hens

In term of nutrient intake, cage hens consume very limited food provided by ranchers or farmers, on the contrary, cage free hens consume wide range foods provided by ranchers and available in nature. We assume that grasses where hens live are pesticide free too

Free hens that eat a healthy and natural foods produce eggs with several benefits such as less fat, less cholesterol, more vitamins (A and E) and fatty acids of Omega-3.

Do you think that cage free eggs better than regular eggs?

  4. We grew up as kids eating eggs from my Aunt's farm. Fortunately, I live near farms that have "happy hens" as one comment said. We try and support all our local farms. You can definitely taste the difference. To me, the organic foods of today are really just the good old fashion food of years ago. Have a great week!

  10. Unfortunately, I'm not an egg lover but at least the thought of them running around loose feeding outside make me feel somewhat happier than when they are all crammed together inside with no space.

  12. I bet it doesn't make much difference for humans. The hens, though? A better quality of life. We don't have eggs much.

  13. Hey Tanza, I totally agree with your assessment of eating eggs from free range hens. Thanks for putting out this information. I honestly believe that we need to get back to the old ways, because the new types of food production is killing us. I wouldn't be surprised to see that a lot of our illnesses are the result of the "new and improved" foods, we are being fed.

  15. We would always buy organic and free-range eggs, even if they tasted the same (which they don't).
I think caging chickens and treated them badly and unfairly is a crime against animals.
